2x Ferranti MK1 High Speed Tape Reader Manuals and Circuit Diagrams 1952

We now have the information on the Ferranti MK 1 manuals, as we have contacted the business in Albuquerque USA that supplied them, then pieced it all together.

They confirm that they are from the estate of the late Prof Dale Sparks who was at the University of New Mexico until his retirement.

The manuals went to the University of California during 1952 and were used at Los Alamos National Laboratory to interface MK 1 Tape Readers to MANIAC 1.

The circuits have been altered and added to in one of these manuals, to enable the interfacing of the MK 1 Tape Readers to MANIAC 1. (A historic peice of computing history.)

This machine was subsequently transferred to the University of New Mexico during 1958 after it was shut down. The machine was however transferred in a very poor condition.

Prof Dale Sparkes restored the machine to full working order at the University of New Mexico Albuquerque.

This is a very interesting historical link to the Ferranti MK 1 that has been past by until now.

In the first picture of MANIAC 1 can be seen Prof Dale Sparks, and in the others the tape readers.

The tape readers can be seen on the right of the console desks, one as it came in black crackle paint, the others have been repainted grey to match the machine.
