RAIR Black Box Microcomputers were first introduced by RAIR Ltd during September 1978.

RAIR Black Box machines were sold as the ICL  PC 1 (and later manufactured) by ICL.

The ICL  PC 1 was re-sprayed and modified for reliability by ICL,

as the disk system of these machines were not to ICL's standards.

The four RAIR Black Box machines here in the Museum are:

1. A Model 3 type 20.

2. A Model 3 type 65 S.

3. A Model 3 type 50 S-C.

4. A Model 3 type 65 S (shown).

Notes:

(1) The type 20 machine here has been used by ICL as "Developmental Proprietary Equipment" in the development of the PC1 and has 4 outputs for serial terminals.

This has ICL labels and reference infomation from Bracknell but no RAIR or ICL badges. This would have been using the MP/M software, it has 64 Kb of RAM.

(2) The type 50 S-C and the type 65 S machines here have been upgraded with dual 8bit and 16bit CPU's, 1024 Kb of RAM and 16 outputs for serial terminals.

These came from a textile company in the midlands and were using the MP/M-86 software.

Black Box machines were the start of the ICL PC series, as the design was licensed by ICL.

This allowed ICL to modify and re-design the machines to their requirements.

All of the different types of re-designed machines are here at the Museum.

There are many complete machines of this PC series here, totalling some 32 to date.
